WORDSTAR KEYBOARD INTERFACE FOR WORDPERFECT 5.1
-----------------------------------------------
THE PROBLEM:
You have used WordStar forever, and know its control-key commands inside out.
It's the only text editor on the planet that lets you touch-type editing
commands at 100 miles an hour without playing hide and seek for function keys.
But there is a time and place for everything under heaven, each in its own
season; and for whatever reason, you have decided to purchase WordPerfect 5.1.
When you first turn on WordPerfect, you are hopelessly at sea. The familiar
control-key commands just aren't there. To delete a line, you don't just type
control-Y. You type {Home} {Home} {left arrow} ctrl-{End} {Del}, and no, I am
NOT making this up! You used to type ten pages an hour. Now it seems to take
ten hours to type one page. Intellectually, you know it's just a normal
"learning curve" for a new program, but for now you feel like a big dummy.
It's a real catch-22. You can touch-type your old word processor faster than
a speeding bullet, but you'd rather use your new one. Your new word processor
can leap over tall buildings in a single bound, but for the time being you
have no idea yet what keys to press to make it work.
THE SOLUTION:
Just install the keyboard and macro files on this disk into your WordPerfect
5.1 system. It puts 60 of the most-often-used WordStar control-key commands
right onto your WordPerfect keyboard. Eureka! Now you can have the best of
both worlds, touch-typing those good old control-key commands, while seeing
your printer become more powerful than a locomotive!
INSTALLING THE FILES
--------------------
This diskette contains a keyboard layout file WORDSTAR.WPK, and a number of
macro files with filenames ending in ".WPM". Log onto your hard disk directo-
ry that contains your WordPerfect macro and keyboard files. If you don't know
what directory this is, then start up WordPerfect, press Shift-F1, press "L",
and read the disk drive and directory name next to the "2. Keyboard/Macro"
heading. This is the drive and directory where these files need to be copied.
Get out of WordPerfect by pressing F1 a few times and when F1 doesn't do
anything any more, try pressing F7 and then "N" and "Y".
Then copy all the files ending in ".WPK" and ".WPM", from this diskette, into
that hard disk directory. For example, suppose your WordPerfect
Keyboard/Macro directory happens to be "C:\WP51", and you have placed this
diskette into floppy drive "A:". At the C> prompt, you would type:
COPY A:*.WP? C:\WP51
If this isn't clear (and DOS usually isn't), invite the nearest DOS guru over
for pizza and then afterwards, ask, "By the way..."
TURNING ON THE KEYBOARD LAYOUT
------------------------------
Start up WordPerfect. Press Shift-F1, then "K" for "Keyboard Layout". If you
copied the files right, you will see "WORDSTAR" among the list of keyboard
layouts. Use the arrow keys to highlight "WORDSTAR", then press "S". Then
press F7 a few times until it asks "Save document?", at which point you press
"N" and then "Y". That's it -- your WordStar keyboard is now ready to use!
HINTS, PITFALLS, AND RANDOM RUMORS
----------------------------------
Every word processor is conceptually different from every other. Many opera-
tions in WordStar have no precise equivalent in WordPerfect, and vice versa.
What I've tried to do here is to provide WordStar commands which will at least
get you into an equivalent WordPerfect task. When you get into each particu-
lar function, though, you may need to answer some prompts that you don't see
in WordStar, or do certain things in a slightly different order. I've also
chosen to put in some default options which are intended to do the least
damage, such as prompting for an OK each time during a global search-and-
replace.
There is no way to emulate the WordStar "dot commands" in WordPerfect. For
most of these functions, you will need to learn the Shift-F8 {Format} command.
One thing needs to be clearly and carefully understood. In WordStar, you can
get away with holding down the [Ctrl] key for the second key of a two-key
command. For example, delete-to-end-of-line is ^QY (control-Q, then Y) -- but
within WordStar, ^Q^Y (control-Q, control-Y) works every bit as well. However
in this keyboard emulation, THIS DOES NOT WORK. You can NOT hold down the
[Ctrl] key when you press the second key of a two key command. If you do, it
will beep, indicating an undefined control-key combination. (For the record,
this is due to a bug in {KTON} which confuses many control keys; if they
change it I will add this too.)
This keyboard emulator can get you going productively and quickly in a new
word processor, by letting you use familiar features of your old one while you
are learning the new one. And between you and me and the gatepost, many
WordPerfect functions really ARE a lot faster to type using the control-key
interface! In the privacy of your own home, nobody need know you have a
WordStar keyboard bolted to your WordPerfect program.
But in the long term, it's best to learn WordPerfect "for real." Many of its
best features can't be emulated with control keys. Also, the day will come
when you must use someone else's copy of WordPerfect, at their office or on
assignment, where they won't let you install your WordStar keyboard. Word-
Perfect is really no harder to learn than WordStar; it's just different.
Please note, this keyboard layout will work ONLY with version 5.1 of WordPer-
fect. It uses new macro features of that revision, and will not work with
earlier versions.

NOTES
-----
1. WordStar find/replace options (backwards, wild cards, etc.) aren't
available in WordPerfect, and certain defaults had to be plugged in to
make the emulation manageable.
2. Print format options bring up the {Format} menu; enter desired options
and then follow prompts to get back to document editing.
3. The ^P* command creates a User box. WordPerfect has incredibly good
graphics capability; learn to use Alt-F9 as soon as you can.
4. In WordPerfect block operations, you select what to do with the block
(move, copy, or delete) at the same time you mark the end of the block,
BEFORE you move the cursor to the new location of the block.
5. Save/Exit options are different in WordPerfect. It's best to learn the
use of the F7 key.
6. Control-V is the WordPerfect compose-character key and must be kept as
such. Use the [Ins] key to toggle insert/overtype mode.
7. Undefined control key pairs are ignored, and a "beep" is sounded to
alert you that this happened.
